Is the Bible reliable? Have any texts been altered?

When you study the history of how the Bible came into being, you discover that it has been reliably handed down. Ancient manuscripts confirm the authenticity of the Bible. There are manuscripts with minor textual variations, but nowhere are there any contradictions in content that affect the integrity of what has been handed down.

What does the Bible look like?

The Bible is a collection of 66 books. The word “Bible” comes from the Greek word biblia, which means books. What Christians call the Old Testament is actually the holy book of the Jews (the Tanakh). During Jesus' life on earth, the New Testament did not yet exist. Jesus spoke of “the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms” (Luke 24:44), which were the scriptures that Jesus knew. The New Testament came into being within 100 years after Christ. The Old and New Testaments together form the Bible. The New Testament begins directly with the story of Jesus. Jesus appeared in the Jewish world, was a Jewish boy and later became a Jewish rabbi. The Jewish context is therefore strongly present. At the same time, the New Testament makes it clear that he is more than a Jewish boy or a rabbi or a prophet. Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah that the prophets in the Old Testament already spoke about. Christians believe, unlike the Jews, that the prophecies of the Old Testament were fulfilled with Jesus' coming to this earth.

The Gospels in the New Testament

The New Testament begins with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, four books that tell the story of Jesus. Each one recounts what Jesus said and did. At the same time, they are all part of the one Gospel, the message of Jesus Christ. The Greek word for Gospel literally means ‘good news’. The Bible is therefore about the good news of Jesus Christ that goes out into the world. Sometimes the word is synonymous with “the Bible”, known in Arabic as indjiel. For it is not only the Gospels that tell the good news of Jesus Christ, but also the other writings of the New Testament such as Acts, the letters (most of them by Paul) and Revelation.

How can human writings be included in the book of God?

When God speaks, He uses people with their human abilities. In 1 Peter 1:21 it says: ‘People who spoke on behalf of God were always driven to do so by the Holy Spirit.’ That is why the human side is visible in the Bible. It does indeed consist of historical books, reports, letters, etc. But at the same time, God comes to us as the Speaker, and we say that the Bible is His Word. The book is one hundred percent God's Word and one hundred percent human words. Anyone who wants to discover this must open themselves up to it with a prayer in their heart that God will speak to them through His Spirit.
